Damage to Reactor in Japan Predicted From Old

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has warned Japan since two years ago that earthquakes can cause serious damage to their own nuclear power installation.

According to the U.S. diplomatic letter in December 2008 that leaked on WikiLeaks, an expert from the IAEA concerned that Japan's nuclear reactors are designed only to shock at 7.0 on the Richter scale. Similarly, as quoted by AFP on Thursday (17/03/2011).

The letter stated that the official party at the G8 meeting IAEA Nuclear Safety and Security Group, Tokyo 2008, has given warning that the safety standards of Japan's nuclear reactor is outdated.

"The IAEA explained that the safety standards for earthquake only checked three times in the last 35 years," the contents of the document.

"The earthquake in some cases have exceeded the basic design of nuclear installations resilience, and this is a serious problem," added the contents of the document.

Japanese authorities are responsible to build an emergency center near the reactor danger Fukushima, but the building was designed only to 7.0 magnitude quake.

Now the engineers struggled to restore the reactor cooling system in quake-hit Fukushima.

Some documents also leaked on WikiLeaks is a letter in March 2006, which shows the Japanese side against the trial which ordered to shut down a nuclear installation that earthquake safety standards already in doubt.

According to the letter, the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency in Japan believe that their reactors 'safe'.
